Standardizing Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi technology operates according to the IEEE 802.11 standard. This standard is developed by the IEEE 802.11 Working Group (part of IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee), which includes representatives from industry and academic institutions. To maintain Wi-Fi technology’s relevance and competitiveness in the wireless device market, the IEEE 802.11 Working Group regularly releases amendments to the standard, expanding the technology’s capabilities.
Wireless Networks Lab members are directly involved in the Wi-Fi standardization process. They are voting members of the IEEE 802.11 Working Group and help make decisions on how new amendments are developed. Some ideas from our members have already become part of modern Wi-Fi and are being implemented in user devices.
Participation in the standard development and interaction with other Working Group members provides a unique perspective on the evolution of Wi-Fi. We reflect this perspective in review papers that identify global Wi-Fi trends, potential innovations in upcoming updates, and relevant applied research problems. By participating in the standardization process and publishing relevant papers, the Wireless Networks Lab focuses the scientific community’s attention on Wi-Fi technology and directly influences the future of Wi-Fi operation.
