Title: How to achieve the best Quality of Service using Periodic Restricted Access Window under correlated event detection
Speaker: Maria Shlapak, MIPT, IITP RAS
Abstract: The advancement of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) concept leads to the emergence of heterogeneous networks, where delay-sensitive data from low-power sensors share a single channel with other devices handling heavy traffic. To protect sensor transmissions from transmissions of other devices and enhance their Quality of Service (QoS), the IEEE 802.11ah standard introduces the Periodic Restricted Access Window (PRAW) mechanism. This seminar focuses on evaluating the performance of the PRAW mechanism under correlated event detection—a scenario often overlooked by researchers, yet frequently occurring in real-world industrial networks. The seminar will present an analytical model for assessing the QoS of sensors, whose high accuracy is validated against simulation results. Based on this model, we provide recommendations for choosing sensor transmission parameters. These recommendations aim to maximize QoS under the limitation on the channel time consumed for sensor transmissions.
The report is based on a recent publication in the Q1 journal Computer Networks, titled “How to achieve the best Quality of Service using Periodic Restricted Access Window under correlated event detection” by Maria Shlapak, Andrey Lyakhov, and Evgeny Khorov.

Bio: Maria received her bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and physics in 2024 from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, where she currently studies for a master’s degree. She also works as a Junior Researcher at the Wireless Networks Laboratory of IITP RAS. Her research interests focus on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks and mechanisms for enhancing the performance of IIoT devices.
